A water dispenser is an appliance designed to make life easy for its users. When a water dispenser is installed in your home, workplace or other public places, you can easily access drinking water. Even children can themselves help themselves to a glass of water as and when required. Since the water is being dispensed straight from the taps, you are also saved from the trouble of filling water bottles several times a day and ensuring that some of them are placed in the refrigerator for cold water lovers.

Since the water dispenser does so much for you, you also need to put in a little bit of effort to ensure that it continues to do its work properly. Maintaining this appliance is easy as you just need to ensure that its tanks and taps do not get dirty or clogged with scaly deposits. If that happens, it is likely to harm you and your loved ones. If you have a water dispenser that is also equipped with a water filter, you will need to regularly maintain the filters as well.

The following tips should be useful in helping you keep the dispenser running smoothly and efficiently for a long time:

The Right Location

The water dispenser must be kept at a minimum distance of 15 cm from the wall to ensure adequate ventilation. Not maintaining a distance could result in overheating and malfunctioning of the appliance. If your appliance has an inbuilt water purifier, it will have to be placed close to a water inlet. It should also be kept on a stable flat surface for proper functioning.

Cleaning Your Water Dispenser

Before carrying out any cleaning of the dispenser, you must ensure that it has been switched off and unplugged from the wall socket.

Cleaning the Tank

The dispenser requires very little for it to be cleaned. A good cleaning once in six weeks should be good enough. Before you start cleaning, ensure that the tank is empty by draining all the water through the taps. A 1:3 solution of vinegar and water is good for cleaning the tank. Flush the tank with this solution once and with plain water four times to ensure that no vinegar remains behind in the tank or the taps. You can also use a bleaching solution with one tablespoon of bleach for every gallon of water. For a purifier-cum-dispenser, it is advisable to drain the tank every fortnight.

Cleaning the Exteriors

The external of the dispenser can be wiped clean using a mild soap and water solution. This includes the tank cover, the exterior of the appliance as well as the drip tray. The drip tray collects water that spills over when dispensing. This can be a breeding ground for germs if allowed to stand. Hence, this must be cleaned more regularly than others. This should be scrubbed clean under running water and dried properly before being replaced in its position.

Cleaning and Replacing Filters

This is applicable for the water dispensers with inbuilt water purification system. Just like any water purifier, the various filters will require to be cleaned and replaced once their life is over. For this, you must get the appliance serviced by the authorized personnel. Quarterly service is recommended. To make it easy to have the servicing done on time, it is advisable to take an annual maintenance contract with the manufacturer’s servicing agency.

Cleaning the Back Grid

It is important to clean the wire grid of your water dispenser. It is likely to collect dust and dirt with time and can adversely affect the functioning of the appliance. It can be cleaned using a brush

Switch Off When Not in Use

If you are not planning to use your purifier cum dispenser for a few days, it is advisable to switch it off and drain it. You must also unplug the dispenser whenever the tank is empty.

These simple steps for maintaining a water dispenser can add years to its life. Not doing so will cut its life short. Now that you know all the maintenance tips, ensure that you follow all of it to extend the lifespan of your water dispenser.
