What do you know about IEC Certification?

IEC 61482

While working with appliances that use electrical sources like power, clothing with this certification provides ample protection if the person comes into contact with high voltage sources. The contact will be less probable to execute shock onto the body as the person to protect with insulating fabric.

The standard that applies to these fabric sets requirements for the fabric that provides safety from such hazards. Under IEC 614822 certificate, thermal and electrical hazards are common in workplaces that require these certified fabrics. Moreover, the certification is only given to particular fabrics that meet the requirements set by the standard. 240 Kilo Joule to 500 Kilo Joule of energy is transferred to the body when it comes in contact with the electrical boards and equipment. This amount of energy is sufficient to end one’s life or severely injure them. Protective fabrics with EN IEC 614822 certificates are the best and most effective solution against such hazards.

Requirements for the certificate

IEC standards like such, clearly state requirements for every fabric for certification. According to the United States using the minimum values of ATPV (arc thermal performance value) and EBT50 (energy break threshold) to measure the strength of the fabric. Arc tests indicate that incidental energy is supposed to cause skin burn injury based on stoll curve in IEC 61482 of the second degree without breaking open on a material or multi-layered materials structure with a 50% likelihood of adequate heat transfer through the testing of fabric.  Energy event on cloth or substance that results in a 50 percent chance that enough heat transfer is expected via the testing specimen to open the specimen while testing.

This section of EN IEC 61482, where an electric arc hazard occurs, refers to using safe garments at work. This specification lays down specifications and testing methods for products and garments for electrical sources against electronic arc thermal hazards, according to the general characteristics of textiles – relevant, chosen test methods are applied, and the arch thermal-resistance characteristics, including the arc rating of materials (ATPV or EBT50), when testing fireproof fabric. However, covering electric shock is not a part of the criteria of this standard.

Testing for certificate

This specification describes the specifications and test methods for electrical employees for safety materials and clothing from the electric arch thermal hazards, basing on the thermal resistance properties of Arc, for example, the following:

  • While testing under laboratory specification conditions under the open electric arc under IEC 61482-1-1, or with an open electrical arc EBT50 and ATPV.
  • While testing with an electric arc direction and restriction under laboratory conditions the class of materials and clothing arc protection (section 1 (4 kA) or section 2 (7 KA))

Check Protocol 1: ATPV or EBT50 arc (flame retardant arc) decides on the checking stage. Both ATPV and EBT experiments performing in the same free arc laboratory. The first result in IEC 61482 certificate, the arc recording occurs in size / cm2. The opening of the material occurs first if the components have a higher thermal isolation value than the arc’s heat potential. If not, the service will be fried when it starts. The shortest time to mark clothing. Some fabrics can be stronger than the other. EBT is generally thicker fabrics are better at isolating heat and electricity.

In addition, the EBT in EN IEC 6148 offers a cleaner and knitting of clothes to the wearer, but not less protective. Don’t decide the healthy clothing you wear on the ATPV ranking or the EBT ranking. Many in collaboration are considering further options. For a substance that is likely to induce triggers in cal / cm2 at second grade in the stoll curve arc because of the suitable thermal transfer, ATPV is a thermal energy event.

Limitation of IEC 614822

Considering the climate and the threats at the work site relate to Arc safety. For instance, an occurrence of the energy of 135-kilo joule per meter square ± 56 kilojoule per meter square in the normal testing of a 4 kA test current (Class 1) in 500ms at 18-28 ° C at a range of 3.2 ±1.2 cal / cm2 in a calculated volume of RH. IEC 61482 certificate may decrease if the working atmosphere varies from this temperature/humidity range. Exposure to higher energy incident or longer length Arcs can lead to inadequate safety for the garment. Danger analyses should also be done before living practice takes place.

The protective equipment shall be worn for full-body defense in a closed condition as well as other appropriate protective apparel (e.g. protective face screen mask, protective gloves, and footwear (boots). Wearing fireproof fabric suit the exposures to Arc – made of polyamide, polyester, plastic fibres, or other apparel such as ties, underwear or underwear should not be done. Using as part of a layering scheme, i.e. along with a shirt or other underwear for a full defense against Arc Flash Exposure is appropriate.
